A fierce turf war is taking place on your internet. Traditional computers are being gradually overtaken by mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Apples iOS devices currently lead the market, with Android in second place. Blackberry is still around, and Windows 8 tablets are due for release in late October.

The plethora of choices is great for consumers, but can make it difficult for businesses and website owners to keep abreast of all of the changes, and make it difficult for them to make sure that every segment of the market is able to easily access their website and conduct business with them.

Some companies are making apps for the two most popular platforms, iOS and Android. Apps can be costly, though, especially for small businesses. Some are trying to get by with their traditional websites, but find that many frustrated smartphone users are clicking away because it takes too long for pages to load on their smartphones.

Recently, though, many web developers have started using responsive design. Responsive design uses a single code base across all platforms, and uses flexible images and fluid grids to adjust the screen size to the platform of the device being used. This ensures that users from multiple platforms have fast, easy, and efficient access to websites, regardless of the device they are using.

CIO Australia, a council of Chief Information Officers for major Australian companies, asked some of their members about their experiences with responsive design. Alisdair Blackman of Coates Hire summarized it nicely: If you treat a new website and an app development in isolation then there is a lot of duplication associated with the delivery of both of those systems. That is especially true when considering ongoing management and maintenance costs. We wanted to find an approach that would help circumvent these costs and overheads and thats what led us into responsive design.

Kirk OConnor, Director of Development for Spanky Media, explains the potential value of responsive design: Responsive design can help keep operating costs down and simplify the process of allowing a business to efficiently do business across every platform. It is a lot easier to have a website that is automatically optimised for any device, whether it is a desktop computer, a laptop computer, a tablet, or a smartphone, regardless of which company makes it.

OConnor concluded, Its a little more complicated than a standard website, and it does cost a little more to develop, but it can save time and money for many operations in the long term. Its not for everyone, but its another great option for web developers as we continue to evolve along with the marketplace.
